The U.S. Embassy in Warsaw, Poland

 is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of

 INTERPRETER/ TRANSLATOR

The work schedule for this position is: Part-time (16-35 hours per week)

Start date: Candidate must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time of receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/certifications or their candidacy may end.

DUTIES:

Serves as the interpreter for the Ambassador at official meetings and informal representational events as well as for visiting US officials.  Interprets for other Embassy officials as needed.  Translates written materials for the Ambassador, other Embassy staff, and for the Embassy home page.  Cooperates with Embassy staff in speech writing.  Writes original content for Polish language Embassy home page and assists with coordination of programs and outreach to American Corners.  Languages used are English and Polish. The incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a local security clearance. 

EDUCATION: 

A Master's degree in applied linguistics or English language studies plus a specialized college-level training in translating/interpreting is required.          

EXPERIENCE:   

At least three years of experience in English-Polish and Polish-English interpreting/translating, with at least one year experience in conference interpreting, including simultaneous (booth) interpreting is required.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:         

A broad knowledge of a wide range of specialized vocabulary (e.g., economic, political, protocol, military, etc.) to participate in any conversation, meeting, or conference with fluency and precision is required.  A good understanding of Poland's major political and business issues as well as recent developments in American-Polish relations is required.  The incumbent must be familiar with the Polish political system and personalities and must be aware of the differences between American and Polish political, business, and legal environments.  Basic familiarity with Microsoft Office suite is required.          

LANGUAGE:

Level 5 (professional translator/interpreter or equivalent) speaking/reading/writing English and Polish is required (This may be tested).

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

Simultaneous interpreting capability Polish-English and English-Polish is required. The incumbent must grasp ideas spoken and heard only once and express these ideas in Polish or English instantly, accurately, and completely in the appropriate style and with the original intent of the speaker.  Ability to translate Polish documents into English with nearly the spelling, punctuation, and syntax accuracy of a well-educated native English speaker is required.  Ability to make public speeches (good diction, clear articulation, etc.) as well as to cope with stress while interpreting is required.  Excellent interpersonal skills, social sensitivity, sound judgment, and capability of working smoothly with others in a sensitive environment is required.  Good drafting and computer skills is required.
